Bodegas Fontana is a leading producer of estate wines, owning over 600 hectares, and managing a further 400, of sustainably farmed, high-altitude vineyards in Uclês near Castile in the center of Spain (106 miles South of Madrid). The winery is run by a highly experienced, eclectic, multi-national team of wine professionals whose aim is to produce reliable, contemporary wines of consistent quality at an affordable price. The wines are a result of a partnership between winemaker Tomás Buendía and consultant Sam Harrop MW. The Mesta was a powerful alliance of sheep ranchers in medieval Castile, who controlled the traditional rights-of-way (cañadas) for migrating sheep. To this day, the cañadas are protected from being blocked or built upon. The Fontana vineyards are nestled deep in the land of the Mesta and are still passed over by flocks on their annual migrations.
